Beijing (AFP) - A college student in Chinaleaped to his death after losing more than $3,000 gambling on the World Cup,state media reported Tuesday.

北京（法新社）——国家媒体周二报道，中国一名大学生因世界杯赌球输了3000多美元而跳楼身亡。

The second-year student, identified only byhis surname Lin, jumped from the seventh floor of a building on his campus onMonday, the Information Times said, citing a witness.

这名大二学生姓林，周一从学校一栋建筑的七楼上跳下，《信息时报》援引目击者的话说。

"I heard him say 'do not force me' and'give me two more days and I'll return you the money'," the report quotedthe witness as saying.

“我听见他说‘不要强迫我’以及‘再给我两天时间，我会还你钱的’，”该报道援引目击者的话说。

"He talked on the phone for more than10 minutes. I saw him hang up and stand up and then all in a sudden he justdisappeared," she said.

“他讲电话讲了10多分钟。我看到他挂了电话并站了起来，然后突然间就消失了，”她说。

Lin was rushed to hospital in Panyu in thesouthern province of Guangdong, but doctors were not able to revive him, thenewspaper said.

这名学生随后被运到广东省花都区的一家医院里进行抢救，但是医生还是没能让他醒过来。

Another student described as a classmate ofLin's said the gambler had lost nearly 20,000 yuan ($3,200) in bets on severalWorld Cup games, it said.

林的一名同学说，林在世界杯的多场比赛中下赌注，已经输掉了20000元了（3200美元）。

"We heard that he borrowed quite a lotof money and the interest rate was rather high," said the student,according to the report.

“我们听说他借了很多钱，而且利息非常高，”这名学生说。

It did not specify which teams Lin hadbacked.

China has millions of football fans, someof who are both devoted viewers and passionate gamblers.

Sales of a government-run World Cup-relatedlottery reached four billion yuan by Saturday, nearly twice the 2.3 billionyuan sold during the 2010 tournament, the China News Service reported Tuesday.

到周六为止，政府运营的世界杯相关的彩票已经卖出40亿元，而2010年世界杯总共才卖出23亿元。

Total sales of the tickets are expected toexceed 10 billion yuan, it said, citing an official with the GeneralAdministration of Sport.

我在中国呆过，我不相信这位目击证人的说法！如果我被人推下楼的话，别人欠我的钱就不用还了。也就是说他很可能是被别人扔下楼的，没有人愿意出来做目击证人的。而且说他当时在打电话，随后突然间就跳楼了，这样的说辞可能是真的，也可能是借口。
除此之外，如果这名死者不是本地人，而放高利贷的人是当地人的话，那么没有人敢出来为死者做目击证人的。
而如果这名死者是少数民族，而不是汉人的话，那么其他的少数民族债务人肯定急着要付清自己的债务。
世界杯经济可谓短期的经济现象，也就一个月时间，不是长久的。所以放高利贷的人希望马上把钱收回来，这样就可以给更多的赌徒提供资金了。这不像一些长期的高利贷，比如可以用一年时间来还，在这种情况下，那债务人就有时间来偿还更多的利息，同时也就有更多时间借钱来偿付更多的利息，目的就是为了再次下注。但是对于世界杯来说，借贷的周期是很短的也是很紧急的。不现在偿付，就没有好下场。

20k rmb is 3200 usd, but in china, withwhat people make, its equivalent of 20k usd that kid lost, since in most placesa entry level job is 8 rmb per hour.. so in other words, imagine a 20 year oldcollege kid in America losing 20k.

Life is worth more than 20k rmb but no one will know what kind of loan sharkshe knew, they might beat him or stab him and if the police comes a bribe willtake care of it and no one knows who killed him.

Interesting, I've always thought that mostif not all Asian cultures were strong enough to restrain themselves from allforms of debt. His suicide wasn't about him owing money, it was about what hisfamily was going to think of him.

2. People wear pajamas and hospital gowns as real clothes. They even wear themin restaurants and public buses.
3. Old men walk around in their underwear in the summer.
4. At public swimming pools men and boys wear underwear instead of swimmingtrunks.
5. Some people don't know how to use an ATM properly so they need to bringsomeone with them to help them.
6. Some people in China have never been to school, some of them can't read orwrite.
7. Most men don't take baths and wear the same clothes on consecutive days.Chinese people smell terrible because of this.
8. Chinese teachers are also very stupid. They don't teach students any basiclife skills. People in China can not even read maps. Did you know that most Chinesepeople can not even find India on a map? Some Chinese people can not even findHong Kong on a map.
9. They eat wild animals. I have seen people put out pigeon traps to catchpigeons just so they can eat them. Who does that?
